The more people move away from the guidance of the heavens and the message of the prophets, the more misery and darkness prevails. It is for that reason that Allah sent one messenger after another. {Messengers as bearers of good news as well as of warning in order that mankind should have no plea against Allâh after the (coming of) Messengers. And Allâh is Ever All-Powerful, All-Wise.}(An-Nisâ’:165)
And Allah will never punish a people to whom He sent no messenger. {And We never punish until We have sent a Messenger (to give warning)}(Al-Isrâ’:15).
After Prophet Jesus (pbuh) was sent to mankind and then raised to the heavens above by Allah, humanity suffered from ignorance, injustice and darkness; for monotheistic religions were exposed to misrepresentations and were distorted by falsifiers, who replaced pure monotheism with idolatry and polytheism. They transgressed against Allah Almighty, told lies about Him and insulted the Divine Self. There was no difference between the people of the book and the people of idols concerning their worship and their lives. The light of monotheism, therefore, disappeared under this colossal heap of polytheism and atheism, which made alterations to and forged the word of Almighty Allah. Those who were given the book threw away its covenants and the word of Allah behind their backs, and did not give them even the time of day. They also concealed the truth, spread falsehood and ventured against the prohibitions of Allah. They were heedless of the rights due to Him and the rights of others. In exchange for such concealment they obtained pathetic lofty positions and despicable money, all at a high cost, i.e. the damnation of their souls. This was the case with their superiors who followed their desires and who favored their whims over the truth. Consequently, bloody wars ensued, tyranny appeared and humanity lived in complete, gloomy darkness, which blackened the hearts due to the darkness of disbelief and ignorance, sullied ethics, defiled honor and violated rights. Corruption appeared both in the land and at sea! Any wise man who ponders about the situation would realize that, at this juncture, humanity was dying and would be on the verge of its demise unless Allah made it right by sending a great reformer. This reformer would carry the torch of prophet-hood, and the rays of guidance to illuminate the way for humanity, and guide it to the straight path.
Subsequently, Allah sent His Prophet (pbuh) to the hub of this glim reality of human life. Allah chose His Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to be His Messenger and the seal of the Prophets, Allah says: {he is the Messenger of Allâh and the last (end) of the Prophets.)}(Al¬-Ahzâb:40)
Moreover, he sent with him the steering light that saved humanity from its misguidance and misery, enlightening them until Allah perfected His religion for mankind, and completed His grace on us with its perfection. He (pbuh) struggled in order to convey the truth to the creation. {And We have sent you (O Muhammad [sal-Allâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam]) not but as a mercy for the ‘Alamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists).}(Al-Anbiyâ’:107)
And so that they may taste the path of happiness.
And so that they may taste the path of happiness. But throughout his entire struggle he did not desire any of the pleasures of this world, nor did he request any reward from the people. Allah says: {Say O Muhammad [sal-Allâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam]): “No wage do I ask of you for this (the Qur’ân), nor am I one of the Mutakallifûn (those who pretend and fabricate things which do not exist)”}(Sâd:86).
His Lord (Allah) even offered him the choice of being a king and a messenger, or only His slave and a messenger. The Prophet (pbuh) chose to be a slave of Allah and a messenger – being truly humble and demonstrating noble characteristics. He (pbuh), therefore, lived like other ordinary human beings; he went hungry like his companions and was also wounded in battles like they were. He (pbuh) worked with them, and boasted about being a slave of Allah, and when his Lord wanted to honor him He described him as being His slave. Allah says: }All praise and thanks are Allâh’s, Who has sent down to His slave (Muhammad [sal-Allâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam]) the Book (the Qur’ân), and has not placed therein any crookedness.}(al-Kahf:1)
The Prophet (pbuh) cautioned others against exceeding the limits and giving him more that he was due in veneration. He (pbuh) said: “Do not extoll me as the Christians extoll the son of Mary, for I am just Allah’s slave. Only say ‘Allah’s slave and Messenger.’” (Bukhari) Furthermore, anyone who saw him (pbuh) and knew him, knew his truthfulness and was impressed by his conduct and honorable morals. Foes even before friends and disbelievers even before Muslims gave their testimonies about him that he, pbuh, had great morals and virtues!! But, it is sufficient and more significant for the Prophet that his Lord gave such a testimony about him. Allah says: {And verily, you (O Muhammad [sal-Allâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam]) are on an exalted (standard of) character.}(al-Qalam / Noon:4)
In fact it is sufficient and more significant for him that Allah chose him to be the seal of the prophets and messengers. And when he had fulfilled his mission, he passed away, but Allah will keep his message for mankind until the Day of Judgment.
